Surrey Police Notices (New updates)

Dear NHW Members

Please note that this Blog Spot will not be used in future as we now have a new
website which is now live and running. Please click on the link below

Welcome to Epsom & Ewell Neighbourhood Watch
Benny - Epsom & Ewell NHW Hi, I'm Benny, one of a number of Neighbourhood Watch coodinators in the Epsom & Ewell area. As a group, we aim to keep our local residents updated with important information and by working together, make the area a safer and happier place to be.

To help with this, we have developed an information system, fronted by this web site which brings together notices and statistics for the Epsom area. If you don't want to monitor the news yourself, I recommend you sign up to receive our e-mails. E-mails can be tailored to your location and it takes hardly any time at all to register. Things have come along way since the early days of neighbourhood watch & you can read more here.

The site is designed to be quick & easy to use. At the top of each main page I've written a short introduction to explain how it works. You can also find out more about the main features. To see the latest NHW notices, statistics & related information now, simply click on your area of the map above. Alternatively, select a link from the top of the page.

If you need help or want to find out more, we've written some FAQs and you can also also access help from the menu at the top of each page. Alternatively, if have a local concern or issue, wish to provide information on an crime or NHW matter and you don't know who to talk to (or you don't wish to contact the police directly), please e-mail your local NHW coordinator, or me directly using the "Contact/Notify" link at the top of the page.

I hope you find the information here useful.

Oh, one last thing ... we do use cookies on this site and may save them to your Browser. This is quite normal and most web sites do the same - you can see them using the options within your web Browser. By continuing, you agree to us doing this.

Thanks, Benny.

Rogue Traders
  • Cold Caller in the Camberley area offering cheap work to fix a couple of roof tiles - then 'finding' more work that needs carrying out at a much inflated price!
  • Cold calling TV company in the Guildford area
  • Cold Calling trader in the Tadworth area offering roofing works but causing damage in the process!
  • Cold Calling roofer in the Tadworth area offering work but with no paperwork
  • Small business cold called in Epsom by someone offering cheap advertising, the price increased once paperwork received!
When choosing a trader:
  • Ask friends and family to recommend traders where possible.
  • Get at least 3 different quotes before having work carried out.
  • Check that all quotes are provided in writing.
  • Check whether you are given a quote or an estimate. A quote is a fixed price for the job and should not change, whereas an estimate can vary by a reasonable amount.
  • Check that the quote includes an inclusive price and details all work that you have requested.
  • Check that the quote includes a timescale for the work to be started and completed.
  • Check that you have adequate contact details for the trader including an address and landline phone number.
  • Check that you are not required to pay for the work in advance. You should always aim to keep back at least some money until the work is completed.
  • Consider using a Buy With Confidence trader that has been Trading Standards approved!  http://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk/sitepages/bwchome.aspx

Scams

Mobile Phone delivery Scam
We would like to warn residents of Surrey to be aware of a scam which involves the delivery of a mobile phone (or similar) that you have not ordered and that could result in financial fraud!
We received a report from one of our own Councillors that she was nearly scammed in this way!

How it works......
The scammers will order a mobile phone in your name and when it is delivered to you, you will receive a call saying there has been a mistake and the goods will be collected by courier. The scammer will then call to collect the phone from you, pretending that they are a courier. The scammers get to keep the phone whilst the bill will remain in your name.

If you suddenly receive delivery of goods addressed to you or somebody else in your household that you know you have not ordered contact the sender immediately.

If you think you may have been a victim to this kind of scam please call an advisor on 08454 040506 to report it and get advice!

HOAX - 'Calls to 0809 Area Code from UK will be Charged at £1500 Per Minute'
Circulating message that includes the letterhead of the Greater Manchester Police warns users not to ever dial the area codes 0809, 0284 and 0876 from the UK because such calls will be charged at £1500 per-minute.

International premium rate call scams do occur.
However, the claims in this message are untrue.
The message has no relevance to the UK whatsoever.
It is a reworked version of an earlier US based 'warning' message. And the US version was also highly inaccurate and misleading. Dialling the numbers listed from either the UK or the US will certainly not incur the huge charges described in the message.

Microsoft 'Reactivate Your Email Account' Phishing Scam
Email purporting to be from Microsoft claims that recipients must click a link to complete a 'one time automatic verification' in order to avoid having their email account suspended.
The email is not from Microsoft. It is a crude phishing scam designed to trick recipients into giving their email address and password to online criminals.
The criminals will use the stolen data to hijack the compromised email accounts and use them to send further spam and scam messages in the names of their victims.

Watch out for “Green Energy” scam calls
Be on the lookout for cold calls from scammers claiming to be from a legitimate energy company trying to sell you “Green Energy” [19 February 2014]
Watch out for “Green Energy” scam calls
Bedfordshire Trading Standards have said that one resident recently received telephone call, whereby the caller claimed to be from the "Scottish & Southern Energy” company.
The caller was attempting to sell “Green Energy” to the resident which would also entitle them to “a £1000 cheque as cashback”.
The caller was using a with-held telephone number and the resident reported that the line was very bad, with the caller possibly using a mobile telephone. The caller ended the call stating that they would call back at a later date.
Although Scottish & Southern Energy is a legitimate company - fraudsters often use the names of real firms to add authenticity to their claims.
The victim contacted the energy company to verify the call and they confirmed there was no such offer available and nor would they contact customers by telephone.
Don’t be afraid to hang up
  • You should never provide your personal or bank account details to anybody over the telephone.
  • Do not be fooled into thinking they may already have the details and are just looking to confirm them.
  • Never be intimidated into making a quick decision, for example, because the offer is available for a limited period only.
  • If you are ever unsure as to whether the call is genuine, do not be afraid to end the call by hanging up.
Social media Alert - Watch out for Spam and Scams!
Did you know about 1 in 200 social messages contain spam and that Facebook has the largest number of phishing attacks?
This is a great article to read! ... http://www.enewsletterhome.com/_eNewsletter/2014/1401_Section_A.html

Alert over dangers of wheat bags after pensioner dies
A pensioner is believed to have died after she used a wheat bag to heat her bed, which burst into flames - prompting fire fighters to issue warnings about the dangers of using them
Philip Le Shirley, product safety adviser at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and Trading Standards Officer at Surrey County Council is quoted ..  “To use microwaveable wheat bags safely, follow the instructions and pay particular attention to the wattage of the microwave, as the higher the wattage, the quicker the wheat bag will heat up, so this may vary the length of time it needs to be in the microwave for."

Recalls
We know that returning a recalled product is not always convenient, especially if it's an item that you use every day, but recall notices keep consumer safe!
The small inconvenience of returning a recalled item is worth it when you consider that faulty products can electrocute or cause a fire and recalled food items may cause illness or anaphylactic shock.
